- Freaked out - While sitting at dinner, Molly recounts the thunderstorm that happened at school: "When the thunder crashed, I freaked out. But then I was ok." (She even had some crazy eyes and hand motions to go with it. That's my girl...)
- Saliva - While stalling for time before brushing teeth, "I have to swallow a little saliva."
- Collection - "Mommy, I have a collection of elephants."
- Dead - This is a weird one. All of a sudden, she's asking a lot about dead and death. One night the news was on and a woman was crying. Out of nowhere, Molly asked, "Mommy, why's she crying. Did someone die?" Oh rats - where's the mommy manual when you need it?

Word of the Day with Molly P. - Part 2
The Molly Trifecta
Last Wednesday was Molly's perfect day:
- ALL of her grandparents were here -- Grandma and Grandpa, and Papa and Grandma. Even Aunt Lois and Uncle Jim! Why were they all here?
- Ballet recital! At long last, the Molly's big debut. And after we got home from the recital...
- AMERICAN IDOL FINALE! Two hours of filler (thank GOD for TiVo) - capped with David Cook being named the new American Idol.
My cousin in Blue Springs, Mo., had been trying to find a David Cook shirt for Molly. When she couldn't find one in Molly's size, she made her this:
That's right - "David Cook is my Idol" in tiny little sparklies. Way too cute.
Of course, we wore this to school on Tuesday. I'm already having people letting me know they're betting on Molly's American Idol pick for next year. Well, we have to fund college somehow...

I Just Hope Tigger Isn’t Next...
“Mommy – flower and glower. Do those rhyme?”
“Well, yes – they rhyme. But glower isn’t really a word.”
“Ok – flower and power and gower.”
“Gower?
So one afternoon we’re headed out to lunch, and Molly is trying out some new rhyming words as we’re getting into the van.
“Yuck and truck and duck and….”
Yep – you guessed it. She correctly rhymed yuck with that word.
Aaron looked at me. Under my breath I muttered, “Don’t react. Just let it go.”
Then, as if she’s genetically disposed to LOVING the sound of that word, she hit it again. “Yuck and f!@#$... and f%^&*… and f%^%&^!”
Ok, so maybe we need to say something.
Daddy quickly said, “Molly, you can say yuck but not that other word. It’s not a nice word that we use.” She said “ok,” and that was it.
Later that afternoon, we’re playing sidewalk chalk and Molly scrapes her finger. Yes, that finger. She comes to show me her boo-boo… and ends up giving me a full-blown bird.
Great – my baby is dropping f-bombs and giving me the bird.
I felt compelled to e-mail Molly’s teachers and explain that she really doesn’t know what that word or gesture mean… because wherever would she learn that? But just in case she starts rhyming words or showing off boo-boos in class, consider yourself warned.
Word of the Day with Molly P.
Molly LOVES to talk. Definitely a case of nature and nurture working together to create a perfect storm. And she loves trying out new words on us. My favorite was the time she used “ginormous” in a sentence a couple months ago… and used it correctly! (We were playing tea party and she said, "Mommy, here is a ginormous piece of cake for you." That's my girl...)
Here are some of the latest:
- Beautiful – Sitting outside, “Mommy, what a beautiful evening.”
- Lovely – "Mommy, it's a lovely day today."
- Options – In response to me telling her we’re having chicken for dinner, “What are our other options?”
- Privacy – Now our nightly trips to the potty include her telling us, “Mommy/Daddy, I think I’d like a little privacy.” This is followed by her shutting the door and Daddy and I looking befuddled.
Tete a Tot: Mommy School
Since we’re finally enjoying real spring weather (and not buckets of RAIN), Molly and I have been enjoying playing outside after school. This usually involves having a snack sitting on our driveway, visiting with neighbors or waving as they drive by. Usually, we have to take at least one “friend” with us – and most times, it’s at least five. On this night, Molly had Humphrey, her favorite little elephant. She was swaddling him and cradling him like a real pro.
When we came in to get dinner ready, she told me, “I’m a really good mommy.”
“Yes you are,” I replied.
“When I get big, I’m going to go to mommy school.”
“Really? What kind of things do you learn at mommy school?”
“How to take care of my kids. How to go to the hospital to grow them and take care of them. And how to cook the food.”
"Wow, that's a lot to learn."
"Yes. But I'm going to do a good job at mommy school - just like you, Mommy."
And it doesn't get better than that.
Taking a Guilt Trip
I had to leave this morning – no, before morning… around 4:30 a.m. – to catch a flight for a business trip. So last night was my last night with Molly and Daddy for a few days. Originally, I was supposed to get back late Saturday night – around 10 p.m. I still do… but at 2 p.m. yesterday I had another trip sprung on me. So now I have to turn around and be BACK at the airport Sunday morning to catch a 9 a.m. flight. So I won’t actually get to spend any time with Molly in between trips – it’s basically long enough to go home, kiss Aaron, sleep for a couple hours, shower, switch bags, and head back to the airport.
Needless to say, I was a little grumpy.
We had a really great family night – played outside, took a walk around the neighborhood, grilled out and ate dinner on the deck, then watched (it’s Tuesday night…) “American Idol.”
Aaron did bathtime duty while I packed. As I’m trying to pack two bags for two completely different trips/time zones/climates (Oregon and South Carolina), in runs Molly, fresh from the bath in her Cinderella nightgown. (She’s recently discovered the pure girlie joy of nightgowns.) She tackles me with a hug and says, “Have a great trip, Mommy. Be safe! I’ll miss you. Daddy and I counted that you’ll be gone five nights – so I’ll see you after five.”
Oy.
So it’s not a business trip – it’s a guilt trip. As much as I really like my job and love traveling (and enjoy a little non-mommy time every so often), it’s so hard to leave Molly. She’s just so damned sweet. She takes very good care of her daddy any time I’m gone – like she knows she has to help him with the daily routine. Once I get to where I’m going, I’ll be fine… but sitting on a plane watching happy families head someplace together, it’s just tough.
UPDATE: So, I did get home late Saturday night - around 11:30. Aaron told me that Molly really wanted to see me Sunday morning before I left. I woke her up. She was still sleepy, so she wanted to cuddle with me in her rocking chair, just like when she was a baby. It was so sweet that I started to cry. And the kicker was Molly's good-bye: "Good-bye, Mommy. Have a great trip!" Killer.

It's not really blogging if you keep it to yourself...
It's been a C R A Z Y month since I last blogged. Daddy was gone for 14 days... then Mommy was gone for six. Then we went on vacation for a week... then we went to the Dan Zanes concert. Then Daddy had double hernea surgery. So, I haven't had time to blog. I do have a Word document on my laptop with about 10 entries on it. So I'll catch up this weekend.
Love you, Peanut.
Love - your very tired Mommy.
